What exhibitions will you see in Old Harbor Crane

Museum Exhibitions

The crane is part of the National Maritime Museum. There are exhibitions on the history of shipping, maritime trade and the Crane itself. You can see ship models, navigation tools, and learn more about port life in ancient times.

The Story of the Old Harbor Crane

The crane in Gdańsk, built between 1442 and 1444, is the largest and oldest preserved medieval port crane in Europe. It served not only for loading goods, but also as a city gate and defensive fort. In the 16th century, Żuraw ceased to have military functions and was transformed into a craft center. After its destruction in 1945, it was rebuilt and is now part of the National Maritime Museum. The monument combines Gothic technique with a unique drive mechanism, attracting history and technology lovers.

Crane Mechanism

The Crane mechanism is based on a simple but effective system. It consists of two pairs of wooden treadmill wheels. In order for the Crane to be able to lift loads from ships, such as mill wheels or wine barrels, it was necessary to set these wheels in motion. The mechanism worked thanks to the power of human muscles

An interesting option for entire families. Each floor depicts a different period in the history of Gdańsk and its port. Interesting exhibits and multimedia are featured. Finally, there's a view of the city from above. The crane in its current form was built between 1442 and 1444.

The beautiful, historic Gdańsk Crane, one of the city's most iconic symbols. This incredible medieval structure is truly impressive in person. It's a particularly interesting place for fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as the architecture of the Gdańsk port served as one of the inspirations for the fictional city of Novigrad. A great place for a family walk, photos, and a taste of Gdańsk's history. Definitely worth a visit!

The Crane Gate (Gran Żuraw, Crane) – a historic port crane and one of Gdańsk's water gates, located on the Motława River at the end of Szeroka Street. It's a branch of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk and the largest and oldest preserved port crane from medieval Europe. It has its undeniable charm. I love strolling here, and I recommend the entire Old Town of Gdańsk.

The Crane is one of Gdańsk's most iconic symbols and perhaps one of the monuments that best demonstrates the city's strong ties to trade and shipping. This monumental, wood-and-brick structure on the Motława River was once a port crane, used primarily for transshipping goods and erecting masts on ships. The most impressive feature is the structure itself – massive brick towers connected by a wooden section to a distinctive, enormous roof. Inside, the mechanism of a large treadmill, once powered by human legs, has been preserved. This extraordinary mechanism allowed for the lifting of heavy loads, demonstrating the ingenuity of medieval port technology. The current Crane is a reconstruction of a historic structure. The original structure was largely destroyed in 1945, and its reconstruction began in the 1950s. Despite its post-war history, it has retained its distinctive silhouette, making it difficult to confuse with any other location in Gdańsk. I also really like its location. The Crane stands directly on the Motława River, between Długie Pobrzeże and Szeroka Street, in the heart of the historic port. On one side, we have the river and the waterfront, and on the other, the dense development of old Gdańsk. It's worth approaching it both from the Motława side, to see the Crane's distinctive silhouette, and from the city side, where its connection to the historic buildings is clearly visible. This is a place where Gdańsk's history is not just decorative. Looking at the Crane on the Motława River, it's easy to imagine the former port, ships arriving, and goods being unloaded directly onto the waterfront.

This is an exceptionally well-designed museum. Each room features a film in the form of a fairy tale, telling a fragment of history that continues in the next room. Firstly, it creates an atmospheric atmosphere, and secondly, the films depict what life and commerce were like in practice back then.

Located on the banks of the Motława River, this medieval wooden and brick crane impresses as much with its unique silhouette as with its fascinating history. The Old Port Crane is one of the symbols of Gdańsk and a place that best illustrates the immense importance of the local port. The current Crane was built between 1442 and 1444 after a fire ravaged the previous wooden structure. It served as both the city's water gate and a massive port crane, primarily used for transshipping goods and erecting masts. Its mechanism was powered by enormous treadmills, on which people walked – with the work of just four people, it was possible to lift a load weighing up to two tons. The crane was almost completely destroyed in 1945 – the wooden structure burned down, while about 40% of the walls survived. After the war, it was rebuilt and donated to the Maritime Museum in 1962. After a thorough renovation, it reopened in 2024. Inside, it is worth seeing the preserved mechanism and a new exhibition showcasing life in the 17th-century port.

The crane, the Gdańsk crane... What a flop. It's only pretty in the landscape. The decor is beautiful, indeed, with well-chosen interior decorations, but is it worth paying for? No. Not at all. The interactive exhibitions are rubbish – stolen weights, stamps... there's nothing you can do! It's true that you can learn a little about transportation, trade, and supposedly the customs of ship travelers, but is it much? Absolutely not, the knowledge is completely superficial and basic. Sometimes you have to search hard to find descriptions of the items on display, and even they don't tell you much. A disaster. The models in the first few rooms are utterly awful, only two actually look professional. The videos in the background are more irritating than educational; I feel they were sloppily made. I've even heard accusations that they were generated by artificial intelligence, but I can't confirm that. Overall, I DO NOT RECOMMEND entering. I was more annoyed than intrigued.

The medieval Gdańsk Crane was built between 1442-1444. At its time, it was the largest port crane in the world. It was a wooden structure supported by two brick towers in the Gothic style, which were later used as residences or workshops for craftsmen. It provided services for loading ships with goods or ballast and for raising and setting sails. The entire facility enclosed the corresponding Gate. During World War II, it was bombed, but by 1950 it had already been restored. Today it is a massive, imposing and dark-colored landmark that rises on the bank of the Motława River and demonstrates the commercial importance of the city since ancient times...

The absolute dominant and the heart of the Gdańsk waterfront! ⚓ The Gdańsk Crane (Żuraw) will absolutely amaze you at first sight. Fascinating history: It is the oldest surviving medieval port crane in all of Europe, whose massive wooden structure and brick towers commemorate the glory of the Hanseatic League. It was used not only to load cargo onto ships, but also to erect ship masts and at the same time functioned as a city gate. Contemporary beauty: Today, this iconic structure forms a beautiful dominant on the banks of the Motława River. A walk around it has a unique atmosphere, especially on a sunny day, when historical architecture mixes with the lively pulse of today's city. Unambiguous recommendation: If you go to Gdańsk, you cannot miss this monument. It is a breathtaking example of medieval engineering, which is definitely worth a personal visit! 🧱✨

Unfortunately, we didn't make it that far. There was a huge city festival, the traffic was catastrophic, and there was no parking guidance system. After what felt like two hours stuck in Parisian traffic, we gave up and drove to Sopot. It's a shame, but with such a festival, it's best not to drive into the city yourself.

The Stary Żuraw Portowy (Old Port Crane) is the oldest and largest preserved medieval port crane in Europe. This iconic colossus on the Motława River embankment served as a combination of a city water gate, a defensive point and a mechanical lifting device. The first written mention of a wooden crane at this location dates back to 1367. After a devastating fire in 1442, the crane was rebuilt in the years 1442 to 1444 into the form we know today - with two massive brick towers and a characteristic wooden superstructure.

This entire area of the city is well worth a visit. It's interesting, historic, and perfect for strolling and getting lost in the narrow streets. There are several places to see, and you should definitely explore this whole area. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy a drink or a bite to eat, both day and night. There's a great atmosphere. From here, you can also take boat tours—in our case, a pirate boat tour—which take you along the canal to its mouth on the Baltic Sea, crossing the entire city harbor. The tour ends at Westerplatte, a memorial site and one of the first locations where World War II began. This whole area of the city is not to be missed. The old port area, the oldest and most historic part of the city, is a place to truly enjoy.

The Old Crane is one of the main symbols of the city of Gdansk and is located right on the banks of the Motława River. It is the oldest preserved port crane in Europe. It also served as a city gate, fortress and transshipment point. The mechanism was powered by people walking on large wooden wheels with a diameter of approximately 6 meters. The first written mention of the crane dates back to 1367. The current structure was built in 1442-1444 after a fire in the original wooden structure. It was able to lift loads weighing up to 4 tons to a height of approximately 11 meters, which was an extraordinary technical feat for the 15th century. Fans of the game Witcher 3 will immediately remember the Novigrad port.

The current version, made of brick and wood, was built between 1442 and 1444. At the time, it was the largest port crane in Europe. Besides functioning as a crane, it also served as a city gate and a defensive structure integrated into the walls. It had cannons on the ground floor and controlled access to the port via the Motława River. During World War II, it was severely damaged: the wooden part burned, and the brick walls were about 60% preserved. It was rebuilt in 1956 and today is part of the National Maritime Museum (Narodowe Muzeum Morskie).

The medieval wooden crane (Zuraw) is an iconic symbol of Gdansk: a mechanical marvel inside, and the most photogenic facade on the riverside outside. The crane was used to lift goods onto and off ships during merchant times. Today, it houses a museum.

The Old Crane in Gdańsk (Polish: Żuraw) is the oldest surviving medieval port crane in Europe and an iconic symbol of the entire city. It is located on the Motława River embankment. It combines the functions of a defensive mechanism, a city gate, and a port machine.

Whenever I look at the Motlawa and the crane, I am reminded of an extremely funny story that I will probably never forget, and it's been 50 years already. And it's still funny, but to the point. It was May 1, 1979. I was on a trip to Gdańsk near the Artus Court, there were a lot of tourists. Suddenly, people started laughing. We saw what was going on, and a huge sow was running with a red PZPR sign. It was 1979, so we knew what the allusion was, but it was embarrassing and a disgrace for the beloved ruler. The policemen who were on duty there wanted to rush her and catch her, but it's not that easy to catch a pig. In panic, they had to call for help, as usual, from the ZOMO (Civic Platform) but even those brave souls couldn't handle the animal. At the climax, she was probably chasing her. A group of these heroes took photos that were then circulated around the Tricity area. And it wasn't just the communists who were raging like crazy, and on their most beloved holiday. Later, heads rolled in the party committee, but it was a complete disaster. It was better than the cult comedy "Flip and Flap." It was forbidden to write about it, and the secret police were looking for people who distributed these compromising photos. It's a shame that cell phones with a recording function weren't as readily available back then as they are today, but those who took it made a mockery of the apparatchiks and their top management. They still remember that wild rampage of the riot police, and they only caught the animal on the Ołowianka Island right by the Motlawa River, but it was a historic trip. cha,,,,,,,tczewiak k13 greetings as usual

The visit was pleasant and very interesting. It's one of the must-see places in Gdansk, I'd say one of the main attractions and the top thing to see along the Motlava River. I visited Zuraw, which is essentially the medieval crane and now crane museum of the National Maritime Museum in Gdansk. I went in January, because although I'd been there before, I hadn't had the chance to see it. We all know the place from the riverside promenade because of its beautiful scenery, but you can go inside and see how it works by entering from the back. The visit is short but interesting. I'd say it's one of the main museums to visit in Gdansk because of the crane's significance. Perhaps some people expect a huge museum and spend hours and hours there. That, I'm sorry, is for other museums. The visit to Zuraw is very pleasant and straightforward; it's the kind of place to go for a quick visit, and even as a children's activity in Gdansk or a cultural activity for kids, since it's a quick visit and they don't get bored like in huge museums. There's historical material and recreations to better understand how the medieval crane worked. Inside, I would have thought it was a hamster wheel or the place where they did CrossFit in the Middle Ages, but I have my own opinion. To any Spaniards visiting this museum in Gdansk, I have to warn you about two things: - There are Spanish coins on display. It's fun to find them and know they made it there. - The cheese is made of papier-mâché; don't even try it. It tastes awful, I'm telling you. If you want something, look for Polish donuts. They fill your stomach and your arteries equally. Wonderful. PS: The best part of my visit was the guide who showed me around, I have to say. Everything was very interesting, but the guide was the best.

The medieval port crane in Gdańsk (Poland) was declared a historical monument on December 18, 1959. It is part of the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk and is also the largest and oldest in Europe. It was used for loading and unloading goods, as well as for fitting out ships.
