What exhibitions will you see in Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk

Road to War

The exhibition highlights the brutalization of politics by Nazism, fascism, communism and Japanese imperialism that paved the way to World War II. It presents the expansion of these regimes, their cooperation and conflicts, as well as the crimes committed against the population in the context of the collapse of the Versailles order, especially during the aggression against Poland in September 1939.

The Terror of War

The exhibition documents in detail war crimes, including the murders of the Polish intelligentsia and genocide in the Warsaw and Łódź ghettos. It presents repression such as concentration camps, forced labor and mass displacements. The exhibition highlights the activities of the Polish Underground State and its influence on the international arena, showing the fight for the Polish cause during World War II.

The long shadow of war

The exhibition closes with a presentation of the effects of World War II, including border changes, the Sovietization of Eastern Europe and mass population movements, including the resettlement of Poles and the displacement of Germans. It also takes into account the trials of war criminals and the repercussions for collaborators. The exhibition ends with a scenography of the Iron Curtain, symbolizing the division of the world into political blocs and depicting war-ravaged Poland.

The museum itself is well-organized. The exhibition is interesting, with a large number of exhibits. However, upon leaving, one has the overwhelming impression that the museum is largely devoted to a single nation…

Absolute must visit in Gdansk! I'm not that much of a museums fan but this one is not to miss! So insightful and interesting, we were there for about 6 hours and we weren't bored one minute. Plan you're time there accordingly because the museum is huge.

Excellent. I recommend getting an audio guide. It costs 2.72 EUR (12 PLN). Everything is narrated concisely and informatively. It takes you from room to room. Yes, it takes three hours, but it's worth it. Europe shares its own history, and it's interesting to see it through the eyes of another people. It's best to buy tickets in advance for May and September.

The visit ended in a nightmare! The staff got lost when our child (a 17-year-old teenager) got lost, meaning we left early. Just after passing through the gate, we realized the rest of our family was sitting without our teenager. We tried to turn around at the gate, but unfortunately, they wouldn't let us! We explained that the child didn't speak or understand Polish! We received the answer: "Unfortunately, you won't get in. You'll have to buy another ticket!" What nonsense! No one had any intention of re-visiting the entire museum exhibition, just backing up a few meters to help the girl to the exit. The whole family was already through the gates! We went to the ticket office, hoping someone might help us. Unfortunately, we were wrong, but no one there either showed any willingness to help! The ticket office lady said she had to call another decision-maker! But this next person was even worse! She had to demonstrate her superiority and, of course, also told us we wouldn't get in! "You hear me, you can't get in!" It was like a World War II scenario, and at one point we thought it was some kind of joke!!! That they were getting too caught up in the regime!! And well.... What should we do in this situation?... We returned to the rest of the family, and I was talking about having to go upstairs and call the police, but one of the security guards overheard me. As we later learned, his name was Mr. Janusz, a wonderful man!!! He immediately reacted... with his heart! He called the shift commander! And he, along with the teenager's father, retreated into the museum, and after a few minutes, we had the child back!!!! Many thanks! Big shout-outs to Mr. Janusz and the shift commander ❤️ And the rest of those 4 people??...should be fired!!! 1) The lady at the museum exit: a young, overweight blonde with glasses 2) The man with a goatee: a young, brunette 3) The lady at the cash register: blonde hair, average age, quite tall 4) The man: middle age, hair combed forward, pageboy style. He claimed to be the most important decision-maker!! He described himself as holding a high position here! And of all the employees, he's the worst! Awful people. Indifferent to everything! They should be supporting visitors! Stay away from this place... My family from abroad will unfortunately never set foot there again...

The Museum of the Second World War is such a sad but incredibly moving museum! The architecture is beautiful, modern, impressive, and the exhibition is put together very thoughtfully. The recreations of the city streets on the main exhibition route were especially striking, particularly the contrast between the beautiful pre-war Polish city and the devastating images of what was left after the war. It really makes you stop and think about the scale of the destruction and the lives affected. Definitely worth visiting!

The Museum of the Second World War is hands down one of the best and most moving museums I’ve ever visited. The underground exhibition is vast, beautifully curated, and offers a deeply emotional look at WWII through the eyes of everyday civilians, not just military strategy. The modern architecture is stunning, and the audio guide is fantastic. Tip: Book your tickets online in advance and plan at least 3–4 hours to see it properly.. Highly recommended!

Completely underwhelmed. Caters only to huge huge groups of loud. Obnoxious behaving school groups, who have no regard for those who actually want to be there and read the signs etc. lack of staff to ensure they behaved. Gave up after less than hour. Don’t bother. Did I expect to be reading signs (and that’s all it is, information signs you can read online!) with a bunch of local teenagers who seemed to find the whole topic of war and terror amusing and a huge joke? No disgrace on your country

A school museum with a few surprises, it offers a detailed look at the Polish people's perspective on the conflict, and does so very well. The audio guide might be a bit long to explore (though I highly recommend it). Allow yourself three hours if you want to read every single plaque, as it's generally packed with interesting exhibits and information panels.

The museum is of a very high standard, probably one of the best in Gdansk. It's definitely worth a visit. It takes about two hours, and there are 18 rooms with a themed exhibition. There's also a café, lockers for storing luggage or clothes, restrooms, and a restaurant upstairs.

Nawrocki's team screwed up a lot compared to the original exhibition. Unfortunately, ignorance doesn't hurt, otherwise Batyr would have howled. Fortunately, things are starting to improve now. The only thing that's weak is the visual communication. There are huge gaps in information about where to go, especially from the parking lot to the restaurant. There are many errors that need to be corrected.

Great museum. Vast and a lot to take in. Set aside a few hours for this. Also only had a Tuesday available to visit which is "free" day, which is great that it was free but it means you can't book and it gets extremely busy. We went 30 mins before opening and it worked out great. Small queue but it just got bigger as the day went on

One star Very disappointed visitor. We were really looking forward to visiting the Museum of the Second World War during our short stay in Gdańsk. Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing experiences of our trip. We arrived at approximately 3:30 pm on a Sunday in late October, only to find a sign stating that no further tickets were being sold that day, despite the museum’s published opening hours extending until 6 pm. We appreciate that visitor numbers may need to be controlled, but clearer communication about the possibility of early ticket-sale closures would be extremely helpful, particularly for international visitors on a short city break. What made the experience even worse was the attitude of the staff. We found them unfriendly and unwelcoming, and noticed staff members looking at their phones rather than engaging with visitors. Hardly the welcome you would expect from a museum of this importance. With the museum closed on Mondays, we unfortunately had no opportunity to return. We cannot comment on the exhibitions themselves, but a museum’s visitor experience begins long before you enter an exhibition. An extremely disappointing experience and a real shame, especially for a museum we had been so looking forward to visiting.

A fantastic museum that shows you all about the second world war from the beginning of nationalism uprising in Europe to the end of the war and the continuation of the cold war. I would recommend having enough time to walk through all the rooms. We were there for roughly 5 hours and still didn't read all the information. Definitely worth a visit. We saw some small children there but I don't think that is necessarily age appropriate. There is a own children's museum that we didn't check out. The depiction of war can be quite brutal and due to the length of the museum it maybe isn't the best place for smaller children. We went on a rainy Sunday. There was a wait to get into the museum but the queue went really quickly. Maybe think about booking your tickets in advance.

The Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk is definitely worth a visit. The exhibition is interesting, rich in information, film, and historical materials, allowing you to better understand the realities of the times. However, you should be prepared for a lot of reading, so exploring requires time and concentration. I particularly enjoyed the more realistic settings, such as the wartime street and the tank exhibit. It's a shame there were relatively few such exhibitions, as they allow you to feel the atmosphere of the era more deeply and better imagine life during that time. I would have loved to see more of these spacious, engaging exhibits. Despite this, I think the museum is worth a visit, although I personally expected a few more exhibitions of this type.

It's worth checking out. They're also very interesting. The museum is so crowded, it's not even worth visiting. On a day when admission is free, it's really crowded. But it's also really interesting. We have to go back again, and we already know that the tickets we bought for 4 p.m. aren't enough time for anyone who actually wants to read the documents and descriptions. It's difficult to grasp that people are capable of wreaking havoc on each other and failing to learn from them. History repeats itself constantly, and globally, at that. Regardless of culture, language, or continent.

Perfect museum, audio guide available in Czech. Free lockers for backpacks and the same in the changing room. With the audio guide, the tour takes about 2 hours if you listen carefully.

The museum is worth seeing. However, I didn't like the fact that the gentleman handing out headphones for audiobooks started speaking to the customer in English. After all, we're in our own country. Let's respect our native language.

The museum is simply enormous and architecturally magnificent. Tickets could be purchased on-site without any waiting, and jackets and bags could be left in the storage area free of charge. There were absolutely no queues at the entrance to the exhibition. The tour is divided into different sections and includes video sequences. If you want to see everything, you'll need about four hours. An audio guide isn't strictly necessary if you understand English, as everything is explained quite well.

Really nice and well-organized museum. However, you have to be prepared that it will take a lot of time if you want to go through everything and have plenty of time for it. We spent about 2.5 hours and in many places we just went through a little faster. But if you are interested in history, it is definitely a place where you can spend a lot of time and learn a lot

Plan more time than you would think! We visited on a Thursday in October and arrived at 11:30 am. There was no queue at the cloakroom, and we were able to get our audio guides without any waiting. The exhibition is extremely well organised, and I really enjoyed it. What I found particularly interesting were the many video testimonies from eyewitnesses, which made the experience even more moving and engaging. If you take the time to look at all the details, you can easily spend hours (!) here. This was definitely the case for me! We visited as a group, and everyone took a different amount of time to get through the exhibition. I didn’t come out until 5:30 pm, and from around section 10 onwards, I had to rush through the remaining parts just to make it to the end. If you really want to take your time and explore everything properly, I would recommend splitting your visit over two days. A few practical tips: Bring a bottle of water, as you’ll be spending quite a few hours inside. A small shoulder bag is handy for carrying it. There are toilets at the very end of the long corridor between the two halves of the exhibition. They’re perfectly fine, although the hand dryers are pretty useless and seem to do little more than blow air onto your hands. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit the café at the end or look around the shop, as I spent so much time exploring the exhibits and the smaller rooms along the way. We visited in October, so there was no queue when we arrived, but I imagine things might be quite different during the high season. I would definitely recommend booking your tickets online in advance, ideally a few days ahead, as they can sell out. Overall, this is a truly impressive exhibition in a beautiful and equally impressive building. I would happily visit again and highly recommend it to anyone interested in history. Just make sure you allow yourself enough time to really take it all in!

Impressive, harrowing, and an absolute must-see in Gdańsk. You don't come here to relax, but to confront the darkest chapters of humanity's history. The exhibition at the Museum of the Second World War is incredibly realistic, superbly presented, and absolutely worth seeing. It makes the sheer brutality of humanity's exploitation palpable. A visit that deeply shakes, humbles, and leaves a lasting impression. May this place serve as an eternal reminder so that we learn from the past and never repeat the mistakes of history.

Buy your tickets online (this will save you the queue at the entrance). Audio guides cost 14 zlotys per person. The two gentlemen who collect the money and hand out the audio guides weren't very friendly. We really felt like we were bothering them. You move from room to room, walking along the long central corridor past posters, photos, films, personal belongings, and street reconstructions. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours for a visit. A very interesting and well-designed museum. However, it was very crowded this Saturday.

The main entrance is locked and there's no information regarding entry and ticket purchase. Employees ignore people's questions with a literal handwave. The slots are limited for some reason and they only take certain number of visitors a day. In a museum. Like it's some exclusive restaurant. Even Imperial War Museum in London allows the visitors to walk in at any time and purchase their tickets. This is the worst system I've seen to this day.

The museum is amazing, but after paying for tickets and the audio guide, they should warn you that you'll be asked to leave before the minimum time needed to see the museum. They should mention this or offer a reduced-price ticket. Or simply stop selling tickets altogether... what a shame.

The attitude of the staff was appalling, both from the cloakroom attendant and the souvenir shop employee. The lack of a smile is understandable, but both looked with obvious hostility at those coming to buy something or leave their belongings in the cloakroom. It's downright absurd. Isn't this a World War II memorial museum? Yet the staff themselves displayed so much hostility and hatred. Such behavior is completely inappropriate in an institution that should remind people of the tragic consequences of hatred. The staff had a terrible attitude, including both the man working in the cloakroom and the man working in the souvenir shop. Not smiling is one thing, but both of them glared at visitors with obvious hostility, whether they were there to buy something or leave their belongings in the cloakroom. It's absolutely absurd. Spectacular museum, rich in artifacts and testimonies. An audio guide is essential; I didn't have enough time to complete the entire guided tour in 3.5 hours...I recommend calculating your time carefully. Free parking is available with a ticket. There's a storage area at the entrance for backpacks and other items. Booking online skips the line outside.

I recommend purchasing the audio guide. It's a mere ten złoty, and without its commentary, the experience will be incomplete. The visit is thought-provoking, moving, and reassures us that history is repeating itself right before our eyes. This museum should be required viewing for all high school students.

It’s haunting and beautiful it’s something everyone in gdansk should visit, they have captured history in such an impactful and impressive manner. All the preserved newspapers and cans of food, drinks, clothes, guns and books makes it all the more real . I’m really grateful that it is available in English and Polish as it makes it to everyone. What a great museum. It starts with an exceptional architectural approach. On Tuesday you will have free entry. If I would have known that I had pick another day as it was somehow crowded. The historical approach is exceptional and provides a great display of the events and circumstances during the second world war as well as before and after without limiting the view on Poland. I strongly recommend the audio guide as it provides additional context - in particular if you do not speak polish. Highest recommendation!

Lord… this is one of the best World War II museums I have ever visited, if not the best. Every single sections were both in Polish and English, the same size, through out the entire history of the War. Every introduction was restrained and precise, covering each one of exhibited pieces. Which were mostly authentic than replicas. Moreover, when it comes to war crimes, its narrative was kept objective and unbiased, even to the examination of the Allied. And what I appreciated a lot, was that it gave quite some sections elaborating on Japanese pogroms in Asia, which was normally comprised in few sentences in many other European museums. While so successfully depicting the entire landscape of the World War II, it still preserved much focus on personal history, with their names, families and fate. In the end, the set-up for the Iron Curtain was absolutely goddamn genius, the most brilliant way to present the cruel division I have ever seen. Two screens showing the life of each side, in a fast-going montage way, but blocked by an actual wall in between, and no matter where you stand, one side just couldn’t be shown fully as it’s blocked by wires. Absolutely soul touching. I think people should simply come to Gdansk just for this museum alone. 10/10. Kocham Polskę!

Excellently crafted exhibition in a beautiful space and building. A powerful experience. Lots of exhibits. I visited the museum on Friday (shortly after opening) and there were already a lot of people there at that time. Tickets are purchased at the box office, so I recommend buying tickets online - it will save time. There is a security check when entering the exhibition. If you want to hide your jacket or bag in the locker at the entrance, you need to have a coin with you (0.2 PLN) or 0.20 EUR, which will be returned to you when you release the locker. When leaving around 1:00 PM, people were already waiting outside.

The building's structure and the entire interior are quite impressive. It must be admitted that someone put a lot of effort into designing this idea. The location itself is also almost ideal – practically right in the city center, the very center of tourism. As for the museum's character and purpose, it probably doesn't make much of an impression on the average Pole... after all, we've been hearing about the history of these events our whole lives. For foreign tourists, it's certainly an excellent place to refresh their memory or simply encounter the reality of those times for the first time. It's definitely worth a visit.

This museum was definitely the most impressive museum I've ever visited. Not only the architecture of the building itself, but the whole sad exhibition was extremely well designed, extremely interesting and it was very easy to listen to the explanation thanks to well working and reliable audio system. Part of the museum was a museum shop and a nice caffee. There were a lot of young pupils with their teachers going through the rooms. No matter if you are a friend of history or not, a visit in this well designed building is worth a visit.

The World War II Museum is a must-see on any Gdańsk map. Two rooms in particular deserve special attention and distinction, as they perfectly transport visitors back to that era. The first is a pre-war street lined with local shops and ruined tenement houses with a T34 tank. The museum not only tells the story of Poland's fate during the war but also presents the history of the world during that period. Personally, I miss more exhibits, especially vehicles, weaponry, and so on.

The absolutely unique building will amaze you upon arrival, and only a small part of it is visible, the main part is hidden underground. The permanent exhibition is wonderfully done, everything is clearly laid out. Although we were not in a very cheerful mood after the tour, it is necessary to remember this part of history, especially at this time. It is a good idea to book tickets online on the museum website in advance, this way you will avoid long queues and waiting at the entrance. Audio guides are available for an additional fee, also in Czech. It is also important to reserve enough time.

The World War II Museum isn't exactly a place for entertainment, so perhaps the description "perfect place" doesn't quite fit... but it truly is!!! The building itself and its architecture are impressive – amazing design and even better execution. The multitude of exhibits, their selection, and description – masterful! The subject matter is, of course, effective and depressing, so if you're looking for a "nice time," this isn't the place for you... But if you want to learn about history, reflect on certain issues, or ponder the meaning of life, this is the perfect place. The facts are presented very honestly – not just "fascism and Germany," but also the history of the Soviet Union, Japan, Ukraine, Croatia, etc. There are no "polished politics" here – only historical truth... I've never been to such a huge (at a leisurely pace, the tour takes about 4.5 hours!!!) and well-organized museum! The Warsaw Uprising Museum in Warsaw was number one until now... but from now on, it's number two 😉. I absolutely recommend it to everyone! The only downside is the lack of any water fountains or even a notice at the entrance that due to the size of the museum and the length of the visit, you should bring your own water/drinks. After leaving the museum (still inside, in the basement), there's a bar/cafe/restaurant, but 14.50 PLN for a half-liter drink isn't even a rip-off... it's downright evil.

Touring with Children

Touring Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk with childrens

Near the conference room on levels -2 and -3 there are specially adapted rooms for parents with babies, equipped with changing tables and feeding chairs. The passages are wide enough to allow easy and safe movement with strollers.

Due to the brutal content presented at the main exhibition, we recommend it for children over 12 years of age. Visits with younger children are possible at the parent’s responsibility.

For the youngest visitors, we recommend the children’s exhibition “Time Travel”, where we present the everyday life of a Warsaw family during the war and a pre-war school class. This exhibition is part of the main exhibition and is located at its beginning.

Please note that access to the children’s exhibition rooms may be limited due to educational activities

The main exhibition presents complex and intense historical events that are crucial to understanding the past and its impact on the modern world. The content may be intense, but it is very important to fully understand the historical contexts. It is an important educational element, enabling the exploration of knowledge and reflection on history.
