More about Oliwa Cathedral
The Oliwa Cathedral is one of the largest religious places in Gdańsk. Located in the Oliwa district, the cathedral is known for its impressive architecture, beautiful interiors and famous organ that attract both believers and tourists from all over the world. Organ concerts, masses and various cultural events take place here regularly.
Oliwa Cathedral
The Oliwa Cathedral has a rich and long history dating back to the 12th century. It was founded in 1186 by the Pomeranian prince Sambor I as part of the Cistercian abbey. Initially, it was a wooden building, which was replaced with a stone structure over time. In the 13th and 16th centuries, the cathedral was expanded several times, acquiring its current Gothic character. In 1350, part of the cathedral was destroyed by fire. The reconstruction took several decades, and during it several new architectural elements were added. In the 17th century, the cathedral was enriched with the famous baroque organ designed by Johann Wilhelm Wulf. After World War II, the Cathedral underwent a thorough renovation.

The Oliwa Cathedral is not only the main church of Gdańsk, but a true monumental marvel and one of the most magnificent architectural masterpieces in all of Europe! Entering the interior immediately leaves you speechless, stunned by the scale and incredible, mystical energy of this place. The first thing that strikes and evokes absolute awe is the cathedral's unique, stunning proportions. Oliwa Cathedral holds the title of the longest Cistercian church in the world, measuring a fantastic 107 meters! Because the building's façade is relatively narrow (only 19 meters) and the vaults soar to a height of 17 meters, an incredible visual effect is created inside. Upon crossing the threshold, an endless, light-flooded, snow-white Gothic tunnel opens before your eyes, stretching far beyond the horizon. It looks incredibly solemn and impressive. The cathedral's chief treasure is the legendary 18th-century Great Organ, created by master Johann Wilhelm Wulff. The magnificent Rococo organ case is adorned with lavish sculptures, angels with trumpets, and gilding. True magic happens as the organ plays – moving figures of angels, stars, and bells begin to move and spin, accompanying the music! The instrument consists of nearly 8,000 pipes! When the organist strikes the first chords, the cathedral fills with sounds of unimaginable power: from the subtlest angelic whispers and birdsong, to the mighty thunderclap that is felt physically throughout the body and sets the heart beating faster. The cathedral's interior dazzles with its décor. The snow-white, austere Gothic vaults from the 14th century, the main altar from 1688, and the priceless paintings by eminent masters are breathtaking. The Oliwa Cathedral is a place where time stands still and art touches eternity. Everything here is captivating: the way the stark Gothic exterior transforms into the luminous Baroque festivity within; the way the organ echoes up to the historic vaults; and the profound solace this temple brings. You leave transformed, carrying within you the majesty of this sound and sight.

We were lucky enough to hear the incredible organ play several songs. It was a bit crowded as there were several tours at the same time as our visit. Fortunately because the church is very large, we were able to see everything and take lots of pictures.Posted on Google

The Oliwa Archcathedral made a huge impression on me. It's a unique place, full of history, beautiful architecture, and a unique atmosphere. It's definitely worth a visit during your stay in Gdańsk. The Oliwa Archcathedral – a beautiful, unique place ❤️ I was incredibly lucky to catch an organ concert. The sound of the organ in such a beautiful, historic interior made a huge impression on me. It was a truly magical moment and a beautiful experience. 🎶 It's worth noting the beautiful decorations and details inside the church, and of course, the monumental organ, which is one of the biggest attractions of this place. If you're in Oliwa, it's worth checking the concert times beforehand – the opportunity to hear music in such an interior truly adds to the unique character of this place. The Oliwa Archcathedral is undoubtedly a unique place. It captivates with its architectural beauty, the rich interior, and its extraordinary atmosphere. The immense work and craftsmanship of the people who have created this place over the centuries is evident here. At the same time, the abundance of ornamentation and the interior's opulence can inspire personal reflection on what a place dedicated to God should be. For me, it is, above all, an extraordinary example of human craftsmanship and history, worth seeing, even if not all elements of this place align with my personal sense of spirituality. Despite these personal reflections, I believe the Oliwa Archcathedral has a unique atmosphere and is definitely worth a visit.

The organ is impressive. But to admire the moving parts of the structure, it's better to sit in the back pews. It's worth noting that in addition to the main organ (above the main entrance), the cathedral also has a second organ (in the right aisle). It's a shame that you can't purchase DVDs not only with the music but also with images of the organ.

A beautiful cathedral that is definitely worth a visit. History breathes here and you can simply feel a different energy. But maybe only believers feel it... In the season, the organ is played every hour for about 20 minutes, for people inside, for visitors. You can of course sit in the benches. You can walk around the cathedral nicely, beautiful altars, high ceilings, stained glass. During the visit, there was also an altar boy, you could also buy some books, but I don't know exactly. There is also a toilet outside, of course paid (3 zlotys) and a souvenir shop, magnets, various holy things, rosaries and the like... There is a beautiful park behind the cathedral.

A new place has opened near Oliwa Cathedral in Gdańsk, where you can stop for a moment of relaxation and simultaneously support an important social cause. This is the Seasonal Cafe, located in the CarEatUs food truck – divine taste, which welcomes locals and tourists throughout the summer. Offering aromatic coffee, tea, lemonade, ice cream, and waffles, guests can also enjoy unique baked goods – Cistercian cake and Cistercian honey cakes – available exclusively at this location. However, CarEatUs is much more than just a seasonal cafe. The food truck serves as a mobile catering station for part of the year, and in winter, it transforms into a relief vehicle. It delivers hot meals to those in need in the Tricity and surrounding areas. Therefore, every coffee, waffle, or scoop of ice cream purchased has an added significance. By using the cafe's services, customers support preparations for winter relief efforts and help finance the distribution of hot meals to those in crisis. Address: Oliwa Cathedral, Bishop Edmund Nowicki 5, 80-300 Gdańsk When: daily from 10:00 to 14:00

The famous cathedral is truly impressive, as befits Poland's longest church. There's plenty to admire inside, but the most famous – the Oliwa organ – can be disappointing. Oliwa Cathedral, built as a Cistercian church in the 13th century, is a Gothic three-nave basilica with a vaulted ceiling in the shape of a Latin cross, 107 metres (392 ft) long and is the longest church in Poland. Its beautiful interior houses numerous artistic treasures: a Baroque main altar and 20 side altars, a Rococo pulpit, magnificent choir stalls and Renaissance portraits of the many benefactors of the Cistercian monastery. The cathedral is decorated with the famous Rococo organ case, created by masters Jan Wulf and Frederick Rudolf Dalitz - an instrument with an unusual sound and a unique echo effect. The organ's distinctive features are moving stars, trumpets and angel bells, which are activated when the organ is played.

The Oliwa Cathedral dates back to the 12th century. It is famous for its large organ and concerts, which, in the presence of numerous historic paintings and beautiful altars, are a truly special experience. Interestingly, Oliwa Cathedral is the longest church in Poland, measuring 107 meters. A short distance from the Cathedral is an observation tower on Pachołek Hill. It's worth the climb, as the view is worth the effort.

Looking through other reviews, my photos were taken at dusk. It was 5:30 PM, and the cathedral, according to the information, was open until 6 PM. During the tour, it was almost completely empty. I was particularly impressed by its length and the number of altars. It's also very high inside. I didn't remember anything from my previous visit, as it was in elementary school on a school trip, probably in the seventh grade. And that was half a century ago. With only an hour, we still managed to see a lot. The main goal was to see the cathedral, and along the way, we explored the rather large Oliwa Gardens. During the holiday season, much of the gardens and Oliwa Park are beautifully illuminated. A must-see when visiting the Tricity area. Any time of year is good.

An exceptionally beautiful cathedral in the Oliwa district, not far from Gdansk, easily accessible by tram or car. Around noon, the organ plays, accompanied by moving figures. The acoustics are superb, and the interior architecture is stunning. A visit to this cathedral is an absolute must.

The Oliwa Archcathedral, whose origins date back to 1186, when Sambor, Duke of Pomerania, erected a branch of the Cistercian monastery in Kołbacz. A cathedral with such a long history is a blend of architectural styles, which undoubtedly adds to its charm! The cathedral's main attraction is the grand organ, built between 1763 and 1788 by Johann Wilhelm Wulff. I listened to the concert with great pleasure. I recommend it! Also, take a look at the beautiful altars and the numerous historic paintings.

A visit to Oliwa Cathedral, which was supposed to be a peaceful and unique experience during an organ concert, turned into something utterly embarrassing. During the performance, a nun approached us and, in a pushy, insistent, and completely inappropriate manner, began demanding money, as if it were a collection during Mass. When we informed them we had no cash, instead of leaving and respecting the concert, she loudly repeated, repeatedly, and in full view of the entire church, that we could pay by card. She stood by us and persistently interrupted us, as if she completely misunderstood the location and the nature of the event. This behavior was so inappropriate that it was hard to believe it was taking place in a venue of such stature. Instead of an atmosphere of concentration and art, we experienced intrusive begging during the concert. A complete lack of respect for the visitors, the culture, and the venue itself. The concert was beautiful, but the whole experience was ruined by the nun's absurd and utterly unprofessional attitude. Shameful and embarrassing.

Oliwa Cathedral, famous for its live organ concerts, attracts large audiences not only from Poland but also from abroad. The cathedral is very large, so there's plenty to see. The main nave houses an altar and a table. The main organ is located at the back of the church and in one of the side organs. I recommend visiting and attending a concert.

I definitely recommend seeing this place. From the center of Gdańsk you can get there in 50 minutes by tram, the ticket price is 6zl. one way (75 min. ticket). Walk through the beautiful Oliwski Park, there are water areas, a waterfall, a palmarium with a cafe... in October there is an organ concert in the church at 11 and 12 o'clock. Be there a little before the start, during the concert you will not be allowed in (or out). Admission is free, but they collect a voluntary donation, it is good to have cash. Beautiful church, wonderful organ concert.

Oliwa Cathedral is one of the most beautiful and unique places in Gdańsk. It captivates with its Gothic architecture, richly decorated interior, and famous Baroque organ, whose sound is truly impressive. It boasts a peaceful, solemn atmosphere conducive to reflection and tranquility. It's a place worth visiting not only for its religious significance, but also for its history and artistic merits.

Beautiful, well-maintained, and unique. I'm glad I was there. There's also a beautiful park, though a bit disfigured by pseudo-sculptures that don't belong there. But the park itself is beautiful, and so are the trees. The modern art museum on the ground floor is rubbish, but upstairs there's some decent art. The cathedral is a treasure!!!

A vast cathedral with rich décor and a magnificent organ. Open all day, you can visit it at your leisure, admire all 23 altars (!), take photos, and pray as much as you want – no one rushes you. Short organ concerts are held daily. Admission to the church is free, but you can voluntarily donate during the concerts – the right approach.

The interior of the church is magnificent and well worth seeing. The main attraction is the organ concert, but it's clearly a program aimed at tourists, and while I appreciate the hospitality, it was disappointing. However, it's worth listening to the three organs, including the one for the choir, all playing simultaneously from one console, and even the decorative trumpets moving, which is a nice touch. Many visitors, including tour groups, come. Admission is by donation only. About 100 yen should be enough. The organ has old pipes remaining, but the entire mechanism is new, which is completely unsuitable for a Baroque piece.

Free organ concerts are held daily at Oliwa Cathedral! ♥️ When they played Bach's fugue, Ave Maria, and other works on this gigantic, historic organ, it was an almost mystical experience! 🍀 Some of the organ's elements move, for example, the trumpets playing angels and golden suns! 🍀 It's supposedly the longest church in Poland and has 23 altars! 🍀 Even now – out of season – the church was full of people of all nationalities listening with delight to this concert and admiring the beauty of this unique basilica! ♥️ You absolutely must visit! 🌹 Beautiful gardens and a palm house with a café are nearby.

Beautiful (even though it is mostly baroque) cathedral. Organ concert (20 min) is a must - the organ is a fantastic instruments with lots of bells and whistles (literally!) with a fantastic sound in this particular cathedral. Times change depending on the season. They collect donations during the convert for maintenance and upkeep - it's a shame not to give a few zl. Beautiful park just outside the cathedral. The cathedral is 107 meters long, 19 meters wide, and its ceiling reaches almost 18 meters. It is beautiful, atmospheric, and the organ concert is impressive. The organ has 96 stops with nearly 8,000 pipes, and the stars, trumpets, and angel bells come alive as they play. There are no tickets for the organ concerts. I also recommend a stroll through the park adjacent to the cathedral. Especially the hornbeam alley, the French and English gardens, the orangery, the whispering caves, the botanical garden, and the cascading waterfall.

An interesting church with an incredibly rich interior. Everyone knows this building for its organ concerts, but besides the organ, there are numerous monuments of sacred art.
