More about Long Market

Długi Targ, one of the oldest and most prestigious streets in Gdańsk, became known as the Royal Route thanks to the parades and celebrations that have taken place here since the 15th century. The tenement houses that decorate it were inhabited by wealthy merchants and patricians, which added to its splendor. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the street was known for its meat trade, as well as the “Piglet Market” held between Neptune’s Fountain and the town hall.

history of the place

Long Market

Długi Targ in Gdańsk is a place with a rich history, dating back to the 13th century, when it functioned as the main merchant route. After the invasion of the Teutonic Knights, it was still the center of city life. The street, then called Longa Platea, has witnessed numerous historical events, including parades honoring royal visits and the site of executions following the Lutheran rebellion in 1526. The tenement houses that flank it were the residences of the wealthiest residents of Gdańsk, which only confirms its prestige. In modern times, Długi Targ, full of restaurants and cafes, is a place where residents and tourists can feel the historical atmosphere of Gdańsk, while admiring the Main Town Hall and other historic tenement houses reconstructed after the war destruction.

The heart of Gdańsk and a truly incredible place! The Long Market Square is stunning in its architecture: colorful merchant houses with stunning details create the feeling of being transported to a fairy tale or the set of a historical film. A leisurely stroll is a must, along with a photo by the Neptune Fountain, a peek into Artus Court, and the Town Hall. The atmosphere is captivating, with plenty of cozy cafes and stalls selling Baltic amber. A must-see! ❤️

The beautiful Market Square, in addition to the Long Market, of course includes the side streets of Mariacka Street, the Neptune Fountain, and the Crane. We were there as a family for the first time for a concert, and mine was the second time in twenty years, and you can see how beautifully Gdańsk is changing. Of course, there's more modern architecture and plenty of greenery. It's one of the most beautiful cities in Poland. 😍 Gdańsk's Market Square (the equivalent of a classic market square, Long Market, and the connected Długa Street) began to take shape in the 13th century as a medieval merchant route.

In Gdansk's fantastic capital – as the Old Town is known here – the Long Market is the heart of the city, essentially the section of Long Street between the historic Town Hall and the Green Gate. The Neptune Fountain is also located here. The adjacent 17th-century houses were once inhabited by wealthier citizens and remain in excellent condition today. Some even still have a side entrance. Cafés and restaurants invite you to linger, and you absolutely should.

Długa Street and Długi Targ form the so-called Royal Route. They are the most beautiful and representative streets in Gdańsk. This most interesting route was the site of parades, important ceremonies, and the triumphal entries of Polish kings into the city.

Safety in Gdańsk's Old Town when the bars close (3) is a fiction. This is where machete attacks occur, just like in 2021. Even though there are guards and police scattered throughout the Old Town during the day, it all disappears at that magical hour when all the bars and dance floors close. That's when assaults, robberies, and other mischief happen. No police station will take a report, considering the capacity. The perpetrators will supposedly leave the scene, although they could just as easily have stayed and celebrated the assaults with vodka. There would be no reaction. As a resident of Gdańsk, I warn you, Blind Eye, this is a common occurrence.

Długi Targ is, in my opinion, the most beautiful part of Gdańsk's Old Town. During my short walk around Gdańsk, this is where I stopped most often, as there's something worth looking at at practically every turn. I was most impressed by the colorful, ornate tenement houses. Each has a slightly different look, yet together they create an incredibly cohesive and striking street. Walking, I felt as if every few meters there was another interesting architectural detail. Along the way, we passed Gdańsk's most important symbols – the Artus Court, Neptune's Fountain, and the Main Town Hall – and the entire vista from the Motława River is capped by the Green Gate. I particularly liked the juxtaposition of Neptune with the facades of the Artus Court and the surrounding tenement houses. It's one of those views that immediately evokes Gdańsk. Even though I had little time to explore, Długi Targ is definitely worth a leisurely stroll. Instead of just walking along, I found myself constantly slowing down, taking photos, and admiring the tenement houses. For me, this is where Gdańsk looks its most beautiful – a bit monumental, but also very picturesque and atmospheric. If you only have a few hours in Gdańsk, Długi Targ should be on your itinerary.

The Long Market in Gdańsk is a wide street that stretches from the Old Town Hall to the Green Gate. On both sides of the street, colorful buildings of the Gothic and Renaissance styles rise, revealing the wealth and prosperity of the city. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a major center of trade, but because of the port, it has also been a meeting point for cultures. Today, it remains a bright and bustling street that is full of life, with commercial and tourist shops as well as restaurants. The hard work and passion of the Poles for their tradition have kept their cultural heritage and identity alive despite the traumas of the past.

Gdansk is very beautiful and still has an old-world charm. The market itself was relatively one-sided; every third stall offered the same things (necklaces, rings, bracelets). Parking requires real luck (which I had), otherwise you could probably search for a parking space forever.

The Long Market in Gdansk is simply beautiful! ❤️ An impressive historical square with magnificent buildings, stunning facades, and a truly special atmosphere. It's especially lovely to stroll along and discover the many details of the historic Old Town. For us, the Long Market is definitely one of the must-sees in Gdansk. 🇵🇱✨

It's a tourist spot, crowded from sunrise to sunset. Of course, if you want to take in all the sights at a leisurely pace, it's best to do so either early in the morning or after midnight; there's certainly not a large influx of tourists.

The city of Gdansk is a delight to discover and visit. It is full of charm, rich in history (some periods marked by tragedy), culture, architecture, heritage, and more. The street was built in the 12th century by merchants and has since evolved into the city's main thoroughfare.

Long Market Square (Polish: Długi Targ; German: Langer Markt; Kashubian: Dłudżi Rénk) in Gdańsk, Poland, is one of the city's most prominent tourist attractions. It lies between the end of Długa Street (Long Lane) and the Green Gate (Brama Zielona), and forms part of the Royal Route. History: Established around the 13th century, initially as a merchant road leading to the oval market square, the street became Gdańsk's main thoroughfare shortly after the German takeover of the city, known as the Gdańsk Massacre. Its official Latin name, Longa Platea, was first recorded in 1331. The German name Langgasse was introduced later, followed by the Polish name Ulica Długa in 1552. Before the partitions of Poland, it was also called the Royal Way, as it served as the ceremonial entrance route into the city during visits by Polish monarchs. This latter name became popular between 1457 and 1552. During their visits, the monarchs were received in the houses lining the street, and on royal family holidays, the city council organized fireworks displays there. This street was inhabited by the most important and wealthiest citizens of the Royal City of Danzig. It also served as a place of execution for witches, heretics, and criminals, whether they were nobles or city citizens. Others were executed on the Galgenberg/Szubieniczna Góra (Gallows Mountain) or in the Torture Chamber.

Długi Targ was once the main city market and is now the major focus for visitors. Things have gotten a bit touristy here over the last decade. The Long Market is flanked from the east by the Green Gate, marking the river end of the Royal Way. It was built in the 1560s on the site of a medieval defensive gate and was supposed to be the residence of the kings.

Gdańsk has a character that is difficult to describe but easy to appreciate. The streets feel lived in rather than staged, and every corner seems to have another detail worth noticing. I found myself wandering without a destination, which turned out to be the best way to experience the Old Town.

Overall, it's very nice. You can hear people walking around speaking in many languages. There are many people around the Neptune Fountain, playing music, singing, and someone painting a picture sitting on the stone slabs. In the evenings, all the pubs are open, you can dance, listen to someone play the piano. It would also be good to redecorate the less-frequented side streets a bit; they are, by the way, very beautiful. Then we can truly say that the whole area looks great.

Długi Targ (Long Market) in Gdańsk is an iconic square and medieval trade corridor, which, together with the adjacent Long Street (ulica Długa), forms the so-called Royal Route (Trakt Królewski). This place is deservedly one of the most beautiful and most visited urban areas in all of Europe. The most important architectural gems of the city are concentrated here: the Neptune Fountain (Fontanna Neptuna) as an absolute symbol of Gdańsk. The Arthur's Court Museum (Dwór Artusa). The Gothic-Renaissance building of the Town Hall (Ratusz Głównego Miasta). One of the most representative burgher buildings, the Golden House (Złota Kamienica). The Green Gate (Brama Zielona), which closes the square.

The colorful houses are worth seeing, but the restaurants in front of them were rather off-putting, as they constantly shoved menus in our faces, trying to lure customers into their establishments. It felt more like running the gauntlet. Otherwise, the Lange Markt is worth a stroll and its architecture is impressive, especially the Neptune Fountain.

It's definitely one of the most beautiful streets in Poland! Beautiful, tall, colorful tenement houses create an incredible atmosphere. Walking here, you feel like you're in a completely different place. There are many restaurants and cafes, so you can sit quietly and admire the beautiful architecture. You'll find many souvenir shops here, with prices quite reasonable by Polish standards. While strolling around, I recommend exploring the smaller streets, which are just as beautiful and atmospheric!

Great place, but the crowds are terrible. I don't like what some people like. Prices are higher than in many tourist cities, such as Porto.
