Golden Gate
The Golden Gate, designed by Abraham van den Blocke, has been a representative entrance to Gdańsk since 1612. Its monumental form with allegorical sculptures reflects civic aspirations and virtues. Destroyed in 1945, it was rebuilt in 1957, retaining the original elements of Dutch Mannerism. Currently, the gate is managed by the Association of Polish Architects, constituting a key element of the Royal Road and the cultural center of the city.

Gdańsk feels like an open-air museum. When you arrive, you almost don’t know where to look first, everywhere you turn, something seems to be competing for your attention. Even after spending several days here, I still couldn’t quite figure out the people. At times they seemed warm and cheerful, at others a little more reserved and distant. Perhaps a few days are simply not enough to understand the rhythm of a city and the people who live in it. One thing is certain, though: they have every reason to be proud of Gdańsk. It is a truly beautiful city.Posted on Google![]()

The Golden Gate impressed me primarily with its exceptionally representative architecture. Built between 1612 and 1614 according to the design of Abraham van den Block, it replaced the medieval Long Street Gate that had previously stood here. It is from this gate, on the western side, that Gdańsk's most important representative route – the Royal Route – begins. The gate was designed in the spirit of Dutch Mannerism, with rich stonework decoration. Its façade has an almost palatial character – noteworthy are the slender columns and pilasters, decorative pediments, balustrade, and numerous sculptural details. The eight allegorical figures positioned on the balustrade are particularly striking, symbolizing, among other things, peace, freedom, wealth, and fame. Their ideological program was intended to express the values that should guide the city and its inhabitants. The history of the gate itself is also interesting. In the 19th century, its upper floor was connected to the adjacent Court of the Brotherhood of St. George, and both buildings housed a school of fine arts for several decades. The Golden Gate suffered serious damage in 1945 but was rebuilt in the postwar years. The sculptures were recreated based on 17th-century engravings by Jeremias Falck, and comprehensive conservation work was carried out between 1996 and 1998, restoring, among other things, some of the façade's polychromes and gilding. While strolling through Gdańsk, it's worth pausing here and considering the gate more than just a decorative entrance to the city. It's a striking example of how, in 17th-century Gdańsk, the communication function was combined with architecture intended to emphasize the city's power, wealth, and ambition. This is particularly evident in the juxtaposition of the Golden Gate with the neighboring Court of the Brotherhood of St. George – two completely different structures, yet simultaneously crucial elements of the same historical space.

There are few better entrances to Gdańsk than the Golden Gate: an elegant confection of Dutch and Italian Mannerism which manages the rather difficult trick of being grand without becoming vulgar. Built between 1612 and 1614 to a design by Abraham van den Blocke, it was intended as a suitably impressive gateway to the city, replacing the considerably less glamorous medieval gate that had stood here before. And it really is rather lovely. The proportions are pleasing, the ornamentation is lavish without being hysterical, and the allegorical statues on top represent such reassuringly sensible civic virtues as Prudence, Justice, Harmony, Peace and Liberty. There is even Wealth and Fame, although, refreshingly, neither seems to have been allowed to take over the building. It is also called the Długouliczna, or Long Street, Gate — presumably because Golden Gate sounded more impressive. The gold, incidentally, is considerably more restrained than the name suggests. The modern gilding uses gold leaf, but the overall effect is one of elegance rather than bullion-dealer excess. Indeed, records note that the 1990s restoration used just over a kilogram of gold leaf. Which brings me neatly to the obvious comparison with the architectural tastes of a certain President, whose preferred aesthetic might be described as Golden Gate after a particularly successful visit to a casino. Where Gdańsk's 17th-century civic fathers apparently understood that gold works best as an accent, some modern political architecture seems to operate on the principle that if one square metre of gilding is good, then 400 square metres must be the very definition of taste. The Golden Gate, by contrast, demonstrates an important architectural lesson: you can make a statement without shouting. It is prosperous-looking without being vulgar, ornate without being ridiculous, and grand without requiring a helipad. A particularly fine example of old money rather than new money — and, given the symbolism carved into it, perhaps a useful reminder that cities can aspire to Peace, Liberty, Justice and Harmony without having to plate the entire building in gold.Posted on Google![]()

The Golden Gate (Długouliczna) is one of the most representative architectural monuments in Gdańsk, marking the actual entrance to the pedestrian Długa Street and the pedestrian debut of the Royal Route. Built between 1612 and 1614 in the Dutch Mannerist style (according to the design of the architect Abraham van den Blocke), the gate replaced the old medieval Długouliczna Gate from the 14th century. On both the western facade (from the Prison Tower) and the eastern facade (from Długa Street), the gate is crowned by eight allegorical statues created by Jeremias Falck, representing ideal civic virtues. On the facade from Długa Street, a passage in Latin from Psalm 122 is engraved in gold: "Concordia res publicae parvae crescunt - discordia magnae dilabuntur" ... "By harmony small states grow, by discord great ones collapse".

The statues are placed four on one side and four on the other. Another masterpiece of Gdańsk!!!

It is located at the western end of Długa Street (ulica Długa) and forms the entrance to the historic center of the city from Targ Węglowy and Wieża Więzienna. Gdańsk has countless monuments. The Golden Gate is another one of them. It leads us into the historic part of the city and the so-called Royal Route. It also marks the beginning of Długa Street. Construction began in 1612, and two years later, the gate was completed. Built in the Mannerist style, it bears a slight resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe. Like most monuments, it has its unique charm late at night.

The famous Golden Gate in Gdansk's Old Town is a Renaissance-style building that once served as a vital entrance to the Royal Promenade. Passing through the archway, one is greeted by colorful historical buildings and long, cobblestone streets, with the distant tower standing out spectacularly against the blue sky. This was once the route Polish kings took when entering the city, and it bears witness to Gdansk's past maritime prosperity. Sunlight streams through the Old Town streets, creating a captivating blend of European historical atmosphere and Baltic charm.

The Golden Gate (Polish: Złota Brama) of Gdańsk is located on Długa Street. It was built in 1612-1614 on the site of a 13th-century Gothic gate, being part of the old city fortifications together with the prison gate and the prison tower. The gate was built by Jan Strakowski according to the design of the architect Abraham van den Blok. The architectural style of the building is defined as Dutch Mannerism. Next to it is the Late Gothic courtyard of the Brotherhood of St. George. Both sides of the gate have an attic with figures symbolizing civic virtues. They were created in 1648 by Jeremias Falk and reconstructed due to wear and tear in 1878. On the western side, the figures represent Peace, Freedom, Happiness and Glory. On the east side, the figures represent (from right to left) Concord, Justice, Piety, and Prudence. The Latin inscription on the gate reads: "Concordia res public parv crescunt - discordia magnæ concidunt", which means "In harmony small republics grow, through discord great republics fall apart".

One of Gdańsk's rich historical monuments. Completed in 1614 in the Dutch Minerist style on the site of a Gothic gate, it was rebuilt in 1957 after wartime damage. It served as the main entrance to the city and served not only a defensive function, but also a representative one. The magnificent facade is distinguished by a stone balustrade crowning the gate, which features statues symbolizing the aspirations of the townspeople. Receptions for the city's ruling elite were held here.

The street and gate are beautiful, too. It's a shame they're constantly renovating things, which gets in the way of enjoying the beauty.

The Golden Gate takes its name from the gilding that once covered it. It can be considered a gateway to the historic center. Built in the Dutch Mannerist style, it was rebuilt after World War II. It is well-finished and beautiful to see at night. The Golden Gate takes its name from the gilding that once covered it. It can be considered a gateway to the historic center. A beautiful architectural structure. Unfortunately, despite years of renovations, it looks neglected from the outside, but beautiful inside.

You can feel the spirit of history there and admire the craftsmanship of the ancient builders. The atmosphere here is magical and very relaxing. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique.

The Golden Gate stands where a walk through old Gdańsk ends, or, conversely, just begins. Interestingly, it was only after the war that it was called “golden” – before that it was just a city entrance, not even the main one. If you look closely, the gate begins to speak in details. On the facade there are eight sculptures that symbolize the virtues of the city: harmony, justice, freedom, peace and other good things that are usually not remembered every day. Above the entrance there is a Latin inscription that harmony strengthens the city, and discord destroys it. Routes that you want to experience — Instagram guide__anna

Behind these Golden Gates, all the beauty is revealed: many ancient houses and museums. Here are the houses of famous Poles - merchants, scientists, rulers of different eras, as well as unique architectural works. These impressions cannot be described in words! It is better to visit these beautiful places once, enjoy their atmosphere and learn more about the history of the Polish people.Posted on Google![]()

A beautiful historic gate, which has been covered with scaffolding and a "temporary" fence for many years. This is a scandal and a great shame for the city's authorities. Ms. Dulkiewicz should have long ago ensured that this place once again becomes a city landmark, rather than its embarrassment.

A truly beautiful and atmospheric place. When you walk through these gates, an incredible street opens up before your eyes, lined with ancient, unique buildings and structures, housing cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, antique stores, souvenir shops… Each building is unique and has its own story. You look around and your eyes wander. Each one is more beautiful than the next. Each building holds its own story. We've been here in the summer and also in the winter. This place is perfect any time of year.

The Golden Gate is one of the most iconic gates of Gdansk's Old Town and a crucial entrance to the Long Street and Long Square. Built in 1614 in the Dutch style, it is elegant and dignified. Although damaged during World War II, it was restored in 1957 and still retains its former glory. Walking through the Golden Gate is like stepping into a time tunnel, immediately immersing you in the Old Town's cultural atmosphere and historical depth. The statues and decorative details above the arch are exquisite, symbolizing peace and prosperity, well worth appreciating. It's also a great spot for photography; whether viewed from the front or from the angle of passing through the arch, you can capture stunning photos. During the day, it's bustling with people, while at night, it's illuminated, showcasing a different charm. It's more than just a city gate; it's a symbol of Gdansk's history and an entrance to the city's spirit. A visit to the Old Town isn't complete without a stop here—it's an absolute five-star landmark!

It is the gate that marks the western end of the royal road. Its name, as is evident, comes from the golden color of its ornamentation. (Statues decorate the highest part, 4 facing inwards and 4 facing outwards.)
